&lt;p&gt;The standout was &lt;strong&gt;CuspAI&lt;/strong&gt;, which raised around £334M to scale its AI system for
discovering new materials, one of the largest UK AI rounds of the year and an
early test of the government&apos;s Sovereign AI Venture Fund. It fits a pattern we
keep coming back to: some of the most ambitious UK AI money is going into science,
not chatbots.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On the public-sector side, &lt;strong&gt;NHS England&lt;/strong&gt; set out its widest AI rollout yet,
spanning a triage tool in the NHS App, ambient voice notetaking for clinicians,
and Microsoft Copilot for more than half a million staff. The promise is shorter
waiting times. The test, as ever, is whether the tools are reliable enough to earn
the trust the rollout assumes.&lt;/p&gt;

with materials that capture carbon. The pitch is that AI can shortcut the slow
laboratory work of trying one candidate compound after another, proposing
promising structures for chemists to make and test.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For the UK, the round lands two ways. It is a vote of confidence in Cambridge as a
centre for AI applied to physical science, and the presence of the Sovereign AI
Venture Fund makes it an early, visible test of the government&apos;s willingness to
co-invest alongside private capital in companies it considers strategic. It also

well-funded UK company pointing AI at science rather than chatbots.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The technology rests on a foundation model, a large general-purpose system trained
once on a broad body of data and then adapted to specific tasks. Where a language
model learns the patterns of text, CuspAI&apos;s models learn the patterns of
chemistry, using machine learning to predict how a proposed material will behave
before anyone makes it. Whether that translates into materials working at
industrial scale is the harder question the funding is meant to answer, and one
that will take years rather than months.&lt;/p&gt;

patients toward a GP, pharmacy, A&amp;amp;E, or self-care; ambient voice tools that draft
clinical notes from a conversation so staff spend less time typing; and Microsoft
Copilot for more than 500,000 NHS staff. The work is funded from a £10bn
technology budget over three years, part of the government&apos;s 10-Year Health Plan.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The numbers NHS England cites are the reason it matters. It says an early trial of
the triage tool cut GP phone-queue calls by 29%, that ambient voice tools gave
clinicians about a quarter more patient-facing time, and that one hospital pilot
saved 47 minutes per clinician shift. If those hold up as the tools reach millions
of patients, the effect on waiting times could be larger than any single new
treatment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The context is that this is one of the biggest public-sector AI deployments
anywhere, and it arrives with real questions attached. Ambient voice tools rely on
speech recognition and machine learning that can mishear or misrecord, and a
triage tool that routes patients carries obvious risks if it gets a decision
wrong. NHS England says clinicians stay responsible for decisions and that the
tools assist rather than replace them, which is the line regulators and the public
will watch closely as the rollout widens through 2027 and 2028.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Worth noting for anyone following the technology: the more advanced end of this,
where an AI agent takes actions across systems on a clinician&apos;s behalf rather than
simply drafting text, is not yet what is being deployed at scale here. Most of
what is rolling out now is assistance, not autonomy, and the distinction matters
for how much trust to place in it.&lt;/p&gt;

round, the London company said. The round was led by Thrive Capital, with its
parent Alphabet and the venture arm GV also taking part, and values Isomorphic as
one of the best-funded AI drug-discovery companies in Europe.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The size of the round is the story. Isomorphic has never raised external money
before, having been funded from inside Alphabet since it was spun out of Google
DeepMind in 2021. A $2.1B first cheque is less a bet on a young startup than a
bet that AlphaFold, the protein-structure system that won its DeepMind creators a
share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, can be turned into a working drug
pipeline. Isomorphic says the money will fund its own drug programmes and its
partnerships with the pharmaceutical firms Eli Lilly and Novartis.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For the UK, it is a rare example of a home-grown biotech built on frontier AI
rather than one bolting AI onto an existing pipeline. It also keeps a piece of
DeepMind&apos;s most celebrated research commercialising in London rather than
crossing the Atlantic, at a moment when much of the UK&apos;s AI talent is being
courted by better-funded American labs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The science leans on a foundation model, a large general-purpose system trained
once on a vast body of data and then adapted to many tasks. Where AlphaFold
predicted the shape a protein folds into, Isomorphic&apos;s newer models aim to
predict how a candidate drug molecule and a target protein will interact, the
step that decides whether a drug works. Getting that right through machine
learning could cut years off the slow, expensive trial-and-error of the lab,
though no AI-designed drug from the company has yet been proven in patients.&lt;/p&gt;
